In this assignment, students will create a presentation (15-20 slides, not including the title, introduction, conclusion, and reference slides) for a small group/church on Acts and the local church.
Specifically, the presentation will evaluate the five ways in which Acts describes the local church. Provide evidence for how Acts describes each of the following:
The local church as the fulfillment of God’s Old Testament promises
The leaders of the local church
The people of the local church
The mission of the local church
The gospel the local church proclaims
Use these five points as the five sections of your presentation. For each of the five sections, make sure to support your points with a breadth of evidence from Acts.
See the suggestions below on how to start answering these five sections:
For the local church as the fulfillment of God’s Old Testament promises, find Old Testament quotations in Acts that show the fulfillment theme. Or focus on the places where Acts mentions how God’s promises to Abraham, Israel, and David have been fulfilled in Christ through the church.
For the leaders of the local church, focus not only on the church in Jerusalem but also on all the churches Paul planted throughout the Mediterranean world. Focus on their commonalities at the level of leadership, not their distinctions.
For the people of the local church, provide evidence of the types of people that are in the new covenant community. This could emphasize the early Christians’ ethnicities, gender, social status, etc.
For the mission of the local church, focus on the sorts of things the early church was devoted to and accomplished.
For the gospel the local church proclaims, focus especially on the apostolic speeches in Acts. What are the major points of the gospel that commonly appear when the apostles preached the gospel?
Use at least two scholarly sources from the GCU Library.
