The assignment is a researched argument essay. I originally chose the topic of long term health effects of birth control. My argument is the cons of brith control out weigh the pros. I wanted to provide information to help young women choose the right method of contraception by informing them about possible side effects. I have 5 sources already that need to be included. Other sources are welcome. Below is my annotated bibliography with the 5 required sources.
Bronnick, MK., Okland, I., Graugaard, C., Bronnick, KK. (2020). The effects of hormonal contraceptives on
the brain: A systematic review of neuroimaging studies. Front Psychol, (11).
This reference provides extensive information on how hormonal contraceptives can affect and
alter the brain. This article goes onto explain how hormonal contraceptives have a negative effect on
mood and mental health among users. It also provides information on how these contraceptives affect
different age groups and how adolescent age groups are affected even more. This article supports my
argument that contraceptives, in this case hormonal options, have a negative impact in mental health. It
also explains why the hormonal options have more of an impact than others. Since such a large
population of women have experienced using birth-control, this study is important to inform women
what effect these contraceptives have on their bodies and minds.
Hannaford, P.C., Croft, P.R., Kay, C.R. (1994). Oral contraception and stroke: evidence from royal college
of general practioners’ oral contraception study. Stroke, 25(5) Pg. 935-942.,1161/01.STR:25.5.935
The purpose of this study was to research the correlation between taking oral contraception and
the possibility of a stroke. In this study, 23,000 women were recruited to help with this study. The
researchers excluded women with underlying health issues to avoid false data. Participants of this
experiment were separated into groups. One group consisted of women with no underlying conditions
or risk factors. The other group consisted of those who participated in lifestyles that have elevated risk
for stroke. The experiment concluded that risky participants and non-risk participants both showed an
increased risk for stroke while taking oral contraceptives. This study is useful for my research because it
shows a positive correlation between taking oral contraceptives and health effects such as stroke.
Hall, K., Steinberg, J., Cwiak, C., Allen, R., Marcus, S. (2014). Contraception and mental health: A
commentary on the evidence and principles for practice. American Journal of Obstetrics
Gynecology, 212(6) pg. 740-746.
The article explains why choosing the right contraceptive option is important for your mental health.
While this article explains that there is not enough data to prove that contraception has a negative
impact on mental health, it does emphasize that life factors should be considered when choosing which
birth control is right for your lifestyle and beliefs. In my paper I do want to emphasize the importance of
knowing the risk factors of birth control. However, it is important that women are informed on options
that are best for their circumstances. This source is helpful to my paper because it explains why it is
important to examine lifestyle and needs before choosing a birth control option.
•K Health. (2022, April 4). Does birth control have long-term side effects?
This article provides many facts about birth control. It explains short-term effects, long-term
effects, and types of birth control. This source is helpful to my research because it explains the lorg-
term effects like cancer, blood clots, and migraines. It also provides information on different types of
birth control and the risk factors of those.individually. This information is important for informing
women when choosing which option is best for them. With this information I wish to inform women
that while there are many risk factors for using birth control, it is important to be educated on the
different types of contraceptives.
National Cancer Institute. (2018, February 22). Oral contraceptives and cancer risk.
This article provided information about the different types of cancer that long-term use of birth
control is linked to. Women that use birth control for long periods of time are at higher risk for breast
cancer and cervical cancer. It also provides information about the different types of hormones used in
birth control options. This information is useful for my paper because it shows the increased risk of
certain cancers are almost doubled with prolonged use of birth control. However, it also provides
information on how some less common cancers are reduced in risk. While this information does not
support my argument, it is still important to my paper to provide all the long-term effects of birth
