What to do:
When we talk about our creative nonfiction, one of the things we can discuss is the position of the “I” in the essay. In other words, when you write about yourself, where are you in the essay? Are you in the middle of the narrative? Are you completely on the outside watching the action or giving information? Are you somewhere in between these two? The answer to this question will depend on the writing choices you make for a particular piece.
On page 216 of your text, we read these bits:
…in their book, Writing True, Sondra Perl and Mimi Schwartz map out possible positions for the authorial “I” by drawing a diagram the consists of four circles. In the first circle, the “I” is in the center; in the second, the “I” shares the space with others; in the third, the “I” is near the edge; and in the fourth, the “I” is outside the circle altogether. “Wherever the ‘I’ stands,” they argue “its voice must be right for the part.”
Being right for the part usually means that the author’s voice is appealing and distinctive without being overwhelming. Sedaris is part of the action of his essay, but he does not dominate it. Granted, we see the chaos of the beginning French class from his entertaining perspective, and he does contribute some funny one-liners, but the real start of the show is the outspoken Moroccan woman, and Sedaris’s classmates and teacher play just as important a role in the essay as he does himself.
McClanahan’s “I” is much closer to the center of her essay’s circle. She writes about her life and emotions in some detail, yet we never have the sense that she is conceited in any way. Partly that’s because she sees herself with such a cynical eye.
For this discussion, I want you to choose one of the essay (I provided on the next page labeled FIRST LOVE By Gary Soto) of your text and describe where the “I” is for that essay. In other words, does the writer put themself in the middle of the circle? (Another way to think of this is in the middle of the essay like McClanahan.) Is the writer in the essay but not alone? (In the circle with others but not dominating like Sedaris?) Or is the writer near the edge or on the outside of the circle looking in, not involved in the action like Doyle? What effect does this have? Do you feel yourself being drawn to one type of essay over another in this regard?

Frequently asked questions
How soon can I get my paper done?
It depends with your deadline. If you need your paper completed in 3 hours, we will deliver it in that time. All you need to do is indicate your deadline in our custom order page here. Alternatively, if you are sending us your instructions via email, please be sure to indicate your deadline.
Will it be completely original? I don't want to be caught in a case of Academic Integrity Violation.
We are as paranoid as you are. Maybe even more! And we understand that the greatest sin you can commit in your academic journey is plagiarizing your academic work. To that end, we have made sure that we check and double-check our papers using high quality plagiarism detection tools such as SafeAssign and Turnitin before submitting the paper to you.
Who is my writer? Is he/she a native English Speaker?
All our writers are native English Speakers. That is not to say that ESL writers are not good, we just prefer hiring native writers because we want the very best people working on your paper. This might mean paying a little bit more for your paper as opposed to when you pay a foreign company whose writers are non-native English Speakers.
What if I need revisions? Will your charge additional for this?
Of course not! If you do happen to require a revision on your paper, our team will handle it for you free of charge. Matter of fact, we won’t rest till you are happy with your paper. So, ask for as many revisions as you need, it’s completely FREE!
Will you give me my money back if I don't like my paper?
We have very few instances where we delivered a paper that a client didn’t fall in love with. But if it so happens that you don’t like your paper for any reason whatsoever, we’ll refund your money back no questions asked.
I have more assignments after this, can you help me with those too?
Of course! And what’s even better is that we can reserve a writer permanently to work on your entire class. This comes in handy for projects which build up on each other and where you need just one writer, one writing style.
I got my order information wrong, can I change that?
Yes you can. Just reach out to our support team via email (support@essaynook.com) or live chat here and they’ll help you change the instructions.
