This course will help you synthesize your BSHS learning and connect the dots of your learning experience. This will help you practice what you have learned through a culminating experience.
Completing this culminating experience will help you reflect on the knowledge and skills gained throughout the BSHS program. This reflection will support you in applying your education to a real-world career that matches your interests, skills, and personal strengths. Considering a career path that matches your personal interests and strengths in the health science field is a vital step to serve your community and beyond. Providing a culminating experience in the health sciences field creates thriving professionals ready to contribute amazing things to society.
Choose a project then complete the chosen option which includes the activity chosen and a paper.
OPTION 1: Professional Interviews
Target audience: This option is most appropriate for students who would like to build professional connections and networks in a health science related setting and get a better feel for the day-to-day requirements of a particular health science career.
Project Overview: You will conduct interviews with three health science professionals who work in a career field that you are interested in entering in the future. You will then create interview summaries and a final reflection paper.
Note: This option required an audio recording device.
Examples: If you are interested in a career in healthcare administration, interview 3 healthcare administration professionals at local hospitals, or if you are interested in health education, interview 3 health and wellness educators. If you are interested in going to medical school you might decide to interview 3 doctors who practice in your local area.
Outcome: Signed interview completion forms from your interviewees verifying your participation, a copy of your interview questions, 3 interview summaries, and a final reflection paper.

Target audience: This option is most appropriate for students planning to enter the MPH program at LAPU or other graduate program.
Project Overview: You will identify a current health related problem that needs to be addressed in your local area and create and conduct a basic research project containing the following sections:

Discussion of Results
Examples: You may notice that obesity is an issue in your local community and then decide to conduct research to determine what support services community members perceive would be most useful. You may notice that a local school does not offer health-related programming for elementary-aged children and decide to conduct research to determine what parents are most interested in seeing added to the curriculum. You may notice that access to quality health care is a problem in your local area and conduct research to determine how local residents are coping with this situation.
Outcome: Completed research project paper submitted for grading.

OPTION 3: Professional Certification / Professional Development
Target audience: This option is most appropriate for students who have an interest in completing a certification or other professional development activity related to their Mission Statement and building on their acquired skills from the BSHS program.
Project Overview: If you are already employed in the healthcare setting, you may be aware of additional certifications or training that would help you advance your career, or you may have been looking for just the right time to complete further training. This option gives you a chance to pursue that certification or development.
Examples: Perhaps you are already working in a medical office and could advance your career by taking a medical course in Spanish. Maybe you could benefit from CPR or advanced first aid training, or a specialty training such as a wilderness first responder course. Other examples include additional specialty discipline-related online courses, certifications or training that would enhance your BSHS skill set and relate to your Mission Statement. Be sure that you can complete the training or certification within the HSCI 497 course.
Outcome: Professional development certificate obtained or other verifying documentation showing progress toward professional development or additional training, detailed written summary of learning showing exactly what skills and content were covered in the certification or professional development activity, and a final reflection paper.
