This next high-stakes assignment presents a chance to be creative. You will translate your Argumentative Essay into a digital genre, one that engages a different, and wider, audience compared to the academic paper. This will take the form of an infographic.
I realize this is not a design class. While an element of creativity exists here, your artistic ability will not be graded for this assignment. Rather, the rubric for this assignment relies on the presentation and flow of persuasive information in relation to your argumentative essay with an audience in mind. You’ve done this all semester. This assignment just looks very different, which is the entire point.
For this assignment, I will be looking for an understanding of translating an argument into a digital genre with the use of visual rhetoric, an acknowledgment of the audience through an organized flow of information, the accurate and ethical use of research and statistics, and persuasiveness of stance on a claim. In addition, proper MLA citation will be employed for a work cited section along with directing your audience toward a location for further information (i.e. your Argumentative Essay).
With so much information out there in our contemporary world, attention has become a new type of currency. In the public space of the internet, visualization can supersede the written word. Even within scholarship and academia, attention to visual rhetoric can deepen and enhance an argument. This assignment asks you to be mindful of your argument outside of this classroom and to engage in, and acknowledge the basic design elements of the visual rhetoric. Furthermore, this assignment hopes to prove your persuasive goals and creativity are not mutually exclusive. Feel free to use any and everything you’ve written and completed for this class.
The Specs:
● Infographic as a .png or .jpg file
● Usage of 1-2 Sources with Work Cited at the bottom
● Due Friday, Nov. 18th by 11:59 pm. Uploaded to Moodle.
Here are some general criteria on which these will be assessed:
1. Translation: infographic should present a basic understanding of translating an academic
argument into a digital medium. This would include 1-2 sources, a Work Cited section, and a
place (however, imaginary) to direct the audience for more information.
2. Visual Rhetorics: infographic should display some concept of visual rhetoric, utilizing visual elements such as color schemes, fonts choice, images, icons, and logos to accompany textual
3. Organization: the infographic should be easy to discern and decipher. Persuasive information
should have a clear sense of flow through its ideas.
4. Professionalism: Proper spelling and grammar. MLA format. Clean looking
