OBJECTIVE:
In this last extra credit short paper, you will write (about 6 – 7 double-space pages in the APA style, not counting the title page, Abstract or References page) on Emile Durkheim’s analysis of division of labor in modern society and his notions of organic solidarity and anomie. Your task is to apply Durkheim’s theory and his notions of organic solidarity and anomie, especially in relation to the “three forms of abnormal division of labor and their negatives effects to create anomic state of society, to analyze what is happening to the US society today; and assess to what extent that our society today is “healthy” (i.e., free from the symptoms of anomie) or “ill” (i.e., with more causal factors and the symptoms of anomie) with empirical evidence.
PROCEDURE:
1. First, summarize Emile Durkheim’s theoretical study on the division of labor in society
and his notion of mechanical and organic solidarities, as well as anomie. More specifically, you will use your required textbook to discuss and summarize Durkheim’s view of organic solidarity in modern society and three
forms of abnormal division of labor that can contribute to the development of anomic state of modern

2. Next, you will apply Durkheim’s study of division of labor to analyze the modern U.S. society.
More specifically, you will use your required textbook AND government collected statistics and news articles, etc. that are readily available online to carefully examine what kinds of examples of the three forms of abnormal
division of labor that today’s US society is showing. (Write about 2 pages on this.)
3. Then, based on 2 above, assess to what extent the US society today is healthy or suffering from anomie.
(Write about 1.5 pages on this.)
4. Finally, in the conclusion assess the overall effectiveness of Durkheim’s theory as it is applied to
understand our modern society. (Write about 1 page on this.)
